I Promise

i-promise

I hear you. I hear your anguish. I hear your fear. I hear your dismay. Therefore, I promise. I will not – cannot – promise things I cannot do. Therefore, I promise things I can do.

My Promises To You

I promise. If you are gay and are afraid, I promise:

  • I will listen to you, strive to hear your fear, and do what I can to welcome you and keep you safe.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

I promise. If you are transgendered and are afraid, I promise:

  • I will seek to understand you, to accept you where you are, to hear your fear, and do what I can to welcome you and keep you safe.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

I promise. If you are Black, Hispanic, Asian and are afraid, I promise:

  • I will not be silent when I hear comments that are racist, sexist, or bigoted. I will speak up and speak out. I will be proactive in my own words and actions.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

I promise. If you are an immigrant and are afraid, I promise:

  • I will welcome you, accept you, speak with you, and seek to learn from you. I will do all I can to keep you safe and a part of this community.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

I promise. If you are Muslim and are afraid, I promise:

  • I will strive to not make assumptions and presume you are radicalized. I will welcome you into my life and seek to understand you, your life, and your faith.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

I promise. If you are from the millennial or Gen X generations, I promise:

  • I will strive to hear your voice, your concern for the present and the future. I will welcome you and your voice.
  • I will strive to make the place I have the honor of serving – Saint Paul Lutheran Church – a safe and welcome place for you.

change-the-world

Be the Change Yourself First to Change the World

We CAN change. But the change must start with me, and each “me” that is reading this. We CAN change.  But, it must first be our own hearts, our own responses, our own actions. We CAN change. But, it must be with the groups we can directly touch: our congregations, our families, our places of work. We CAN change. But, it must be with those we can directly reach and touch and love. We CAN change. But, it must be the groups we have touched and then touch other groups – sharing, including, accepting. We CAN change. But, it must be an action that grows out from each one of us and each group we belong to.

We CAN change. We can change the world. But it must begin with each “me.”

I promise. Will you promise with me?
